CenDel Foundation and DANA Help Nonprofits Enhance Grant Writing Skills

Six Kent County nonprofit organizations have completed the first phase of an intensive training course designed to enhance their ability to secure funding through grants.  The program, launched by the CenDel Foundation and the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement (DANA), focused on improving the grant writing skills for individuals involved in the process of applying for critical funding.

Representatives from Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity, Arise, Hope Medical Clinic, Mom’s House, Minds Over Matter Initiative and Uplift the Community attended the Fellowship for Fundraising Excellence Program, which consisted of three half-day seminars.

According to Sheila Bravo, President and CEO of DANA, “Grant writing is essential to the survival of most nonprofit organizations, which are strapped for funding. Cuts in state funding for these organizations mean it is even more important for nonprofits to be able to secure funding through grants.” CenDel Board Director Kathleen Hawkins added, “We hope the classes provided participants with the skills and confidence they need to successfully find new funding sources through grant writing.”

The completion of the classes marks the end of just the first phase of the program. Now, the nonprofits will put what they learned into action, working with a professional grant writer for personalized coaching and support.

According to attendee Jocelyn Tice of Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity, “The Grant Fellowship was very beneficial and informative, not just for grant management, but also how it relates to non-profit management.  The various speakers provided great information and provided us some new perspectives on how we approach our grant writing. We look forward to implementing some of these new concepts into future grant proposals."

The cost of this program was underwritten by Faw Casson, with additional support from Del-One Federal Credit Union, Merrill Lynch, and Delaware Electric Cooperative.
