Cendel and Delaware Community Foundation Announce $234,000 in Grants in Kent County!
The CenDel Foundation and the Delaware Community Foundation have awarded $234,000 in grants to twelve nonprofits focused on emergency housing, homelessness, hunger and health care. The grants were distributed from the Benjamin Potter Charity Trust, a fund at the Delaware Community Foundation, at a luncheon on Thursday, October 24th sponsored by the Dover Federal Credit Union. The grant amounts ranged from $4,000 to $28,000.

2019 grant recipients include: Caring Hearts Helping Hands, Catholic Charities, Children’s Beach House, Communities in Schools, Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, First State Community Action Agency, Food Bank of Delaware, Harry K Foundation, Milford Housing Development Corporation, NCALL, Peoples Place, and YMCA of Delaware.

The funding will be used by the recipients to help feed, house, and provide health and educational services to those in need in central Delaware. One of the grants, totaling $15,000, was awarded to the Food Bank of Delaware. The money will be used to fund its Backpack Program, which provides meal items to food insecure children from North Dover Elementary School for weekend nourishment.

According to Larry Haase of the Food Bank of Delaware, “This grant will support 76 kids from North Dover Elementary and help them get through the weekend with our Backpack Program, which they rely on. We are looking forward to seeing this program grow from the generosity of this grant.”

The Milford Housing Authority received a $28,000 grant that will pay for free emergency home repairs of low-income homeowners to prevent homelessness and threats to safety. According to Debbie White and Susan Davis of the Milford Housing Authority, “This grant will allow us to help Kent County homeowners with safety repairs beyond what state programs can help with and help people stay safer, dryer, and warmer during these upcoming winter months.”

The Potter Trust, established by Colonel Benjamin Potter in 1843 is one of the oldest trusts in the nation and has helped the economically underprivileged in Kent County for 175 years. The fund is administered by the DCF, and the CenDel Foundation selects grantees each year.

The CenDel Foundation, in partnership with the Delaware Community Foundation, is committed to helping generous people transform their community through charitable giving. Since 2008, CenDel has distributed nearly $3 million in grants and funding to a variety of organizations in Central Delaware, improving the lives of those living in Kent County.  For more information, please call 302.724.7538 or visit www.cendelfoundation.org
